Community Projects

As part of the ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for the residents in the local villages, Lake Albert Safari Lodge has developed a small-scale vegetable farming project. A selection of vegetable seeds are provided by Lake Albert Safari Lodge, and the final produce is then purchased and used in the preparation of daily meals. A community Liaison Officer (Sam Tusabe) is also responsible for educating the local community on the benefits of preserving their environment.

Another very successful project promotes the cutting of thatch grass by local women. The women are transported to the selected area by Lake Albert Safari Lodge and the finished bundles are then purchased and either used at the lodge, or sold to buyers throughout Uganda. The thatch grass available from Kabwoya has been declared one of the finest grasses available!

In the nearby town of Hoima, the Mukihani Forest Reserve is undergoing a face-lift. Lake Albert Safaris in conjunction with local communities is re-planting indigenous trees in areas previously de-forested by tobacco farmers. A community liaison officer, (Alfred Ochol) has been appointed and he is responsible for educating the local farmers in forest conservation as well as developing a nursery of indigenous trees such as Mahogany and Musisi trees. A plantation of Pine and Eucalyptus is also underway with the aim of providing local Ugandan companies with wood products previously imported such as electricity poles.
